How to Stretch a Canvas

There are several benefits to learning how to stretch your own canvas. From saving on costs and time to having the option to select the exact quality and texture of the canvas you’re working with, stretching your own canvas provides you with some flexibility that pre-purchased canvases cannot. So, how do you stretch your own canvas? We’ve explained the steps below in this ‘How To.’ Check them out:

Step One:

Lay out your fabric face-down and place your stretcher face-down on top. Use a measuring tape to ensure your stretcher is square and in the center of your fabric.

Step Two:

Depending on the thickness of your stretcher bars and fabric, measure out 2-3 inches around the perimeter of your stretcher. Once you’ve marked out the distance, you can begin trimming.

Step Three:

Once you have finished the initial trimming, ensure your stretcher is centrally located on your fabric. Then begin folding your edges over the frame, at opposite ends of the fabric in the order of the numbers in the accompanying image. Start with numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4. Staple the fabric to the frame using a staple gun.

Step Four:

It is important to ensure your canvas is flush with your wall. You will have to fold the excess canvas in the corners by pulling it taught, and folding it into a triangle which you will then fold over the corner and secure with a staple gun.

Step Five:

Before securing the final side, flip your canvas over and ensure the tension is consistent and that the surface is even. Once you’re satisfied, you can complete the final side and secure it with the staple gun. Trim any excess canvas.
